The short version
- SEO ranks you. AEO selects you. GEO cites and recommends you.
- SEO optimises for a list of links. AEO optimises to be the direct answer. GEO optimises to be named inside a generated answer.
- GEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. The brands winning at it in 2026 are mostly brands that already had SEO working.
- EMARKETER expects 31.3% of the US population to use generative AI search in 2026; analysts expect GEO to take 40%+ of enterprise SEO budgets by 2027.
What is SEO?#
Search engine optimisation is the practice of getting your pages to rank highly in a list of results. The unit of success is a position for a query, and the payoff is a click. Everything about it assumes a human will scan the list and choose.
What is AEO?#
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of becoming the source used for a direct answer — a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, a Google AI Overview. The unit of success is being selected as the answer rather than offered as an option. There is often no click at all, which is the point and the problem.
What is GEO?#
Generative engine optimisation is the practice of structuring your content and your wider presence so that generative systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini — cite and recommend you when they compose an answer. The unit of success is a mention inside generated prose, usually alongside two or three competitors. [1]
The important difference is that a generative answer is assembled, not retrieved. There is no list to be tenth on. You are either in the paragraph or you are absent from the conversation, and absent looks identical to never having been searched for.
The three side by side#
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list | Be the direct answer | Be named in a generated answer |
| Surface | Results page | Snippets, panels, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini |
| Unit of analysis | Keyword | Question | Prompt, and the topic behind it |
| Primary metric | Position, clicks | Snippet ownership | Share of voice, citation rate |
| What you change | Pages, links, technical health | Structure, directness, schema | Third-party presence, entity clarity, data |
| Who controls the outcome | Mostly you | Mostly you | Mostly other people’s sites |
| Feedback speed | Weeks | Weeks | Days — answers move fast |
Framings drawn from public sources, August 2026: Jasper, Writer, Stackmatix, SEO.com, adoption forecasts from EMARKETER. Terminology in this space is not settled — some writers use AEO and GEO interchangeably, and the boundary between them genuinely blurs where AI Overviews are concerned.
The row that matters most#
Look again at who controls the outcome. In SEO and AEO, the work is mostly on property you own. In GEO it mostly isn’t — the answer is assembled from sources the model trusts, and those are largely other people’s websites.
That single difference invalidates most transferred SEO instinct. You cannot fix your GEO position by rewriting your homepage, any more than you could fix your reputation by editing your own CV. One analysis found 85% of brand mentions came from external domains, which is the whole strategic story in one number.
Does GEO replace SEO?#
No, and the framing is a trap. Generative engines still need to find, crawl and parse your content, and they lean on the same signals of authority that search rankings do. In practice the brands doing well at GEO in 2026 are disproportionately the ones with functioning SEO foundations. [1]
GEO adds requirements SEO never had: entity clarity, citation-friendly phrasing, structured data, presence on third-party sources, and freshness that actually matters. It is an additional layer with its own metrics, not a migration.
Why the terminology is churning#
Three acronyms for overlapping practices is a sign of a category being named in public, mid-formation. It will consolidate. Meanwhile the useful move is to ignore the label argument and be specific about the question you are answering:
- Am I in the list? — that is SEO.
- Am I the answer? — that is AEO.
- Am I in the recommendation? — that is GEO.
The third question is the one most companies cannot currently answer about themselves, which is a strange place to be given how much of the buying journey now starts there. Here is how to make it measurable, and here is what the tooling costs.
